This is gonna get a little sappy. Sorry in advance. ^^;
I’ve been cosplaying for about six years now, and I’ve been through a lot. There were a lot of large fandoms, group projects, meet ups, and cons, and somewhere in the middle of all that, I saved up some money and took myself on a journey to find myself which led me, the cosplayer on the left, all the way from Los Angeles, California to Williams Lake, British Columbia. (That’s in Canada, btw.)
Not only did I find myself there, I also found Jackie, the talented, beautiful cosplayer on my right. Since then, we’ve gone to all our favorite local meet ups and cons together, and now we’re proud staff members at Anime Los Angeles. When we’re not doing the ol’ convention crawl, we’re usually playing video games. Our favorite is Megaman, and we just so happened to bond the most of the Battle Network series.
In the photo above, I’m Lan Hikari and she’s Chaud Blaze. I made both of the costumes out of stuff I found at thrift shops and random pieces of scrap fabric from a plastic bin I keep under the kitchen table at our apartment. I’m really proud of these two outfits because of the sentimental value, I think. They’ve been through lots and lots of repairs, updates, and re-designs, but working on them makes me happy.
Back when this photo shoot happened (circa PMX 2011, I think) Jackie and I had been together for a year and some change and we were just barely starting to figure out exactly when and how we wanted to tie the knot. Two years and countless convention adventures later, on August 9th, 2013, we finally got married.
Jackie is the love of my life—the life she saved. Without her, I’d probably still be getting bullied over my weight and my short hair and what used to be a crippling lack of self-confidence. I’m so lucky that she is such a huge part of my life and that she loves working on costumes and playing video games with me.
And if that weren’t awesome enough, she’s an incredible chef—hence the weight gain. What can I say? I love to eat and I love my curves! So what if I went from being a size 16 to a size 18 this summer? Life is too short and too fun to waste self-deprecating!
GA: It’s SOOOO nice to see such a happy ending to a story… embrace yourself, embrace your hobbies and embrace your love no matter what… this is great. Thank you for the submission :)
